Gloria with Angst

Bratby, John (RA) (1928-1992)
John Bratby painted Gloria Bishop in a number of pictures made in the 1960s. During this period his figure subjects were mainly friends and acquaintances. The style of this brightly coloured and thickly painted scene was a development from Bratby's earlier paintings as one of the Kitchen Sink group of artists. The group's name referred to their use of ordinary living spaces as subject matter. The artists of the group painted in a strongly outlined realist style.
