Newcastle upon Tyne from Gateshead

1895

Lund, Niels Moeller (1863 - 1916)

This detailed and sunny view of Newcastle is painted from high above St. Mary's Church, on the Gateshead bank. Steam trains are passing over the top deck of the High Level Bridge, and traffic can be seen on the lower road deck of the bridge. The new Swing Bridge is swivelled to allow a ship to pass. Niels Lund was well known at this time for his landscapes and cityscapes. He trained in Newcastle and made long visits to the North East after moving to London.
