The Ship Oregon off Tynemouth

1859

Scott, John (1802 - 1885)

The 'Oregon' has been towed from the River Tyne by a steam paddle-tug, at the start of her sea voyage. The ship was built in North America and carried goods and passengers for the Newcastle ship owner Henry Milvain. The ship is painted with fake gun ports, a fashion of the time. The picture is by North-East artist John Scott, who was a specialist ship-portrait painter. He had worked as a sailor before training with the local shipping painter John Wilson Carmichael.
