Young Australia

Dawson, Montague J. (1895 - 1973)

Many emigrants from England sailed on the ship 'Young Australia', hoping to find better jobs in Australia. The ship sailed from London to Brisbane from 1861 to 1870 as part of James Baine's Black Ball shipping line. The huge amount of sail on 'clipper' ships, such as this, allowed them to travel at a fast 'clip'. They cut the journey time to Australia from around 7 months to about 2 ½ months. The Australian authorities helped pay the cost of the journey for some migrants. Montague Dawson's picture is an imaginative recreation of the ship. The ship was built in 1852 in America as 'Red Rover'. After it was sold by James Baine, it was wrecked in 1872 off Brisbane. Everyone was saved.
