Public Screenings
As part of the delivery of the project, a public screening programme was delivered in order to promote greater awareness and understanding of diverse communities in the North East to the wider North East community and of the potential of museums to make a difference. This included the opening of a vacant shop called Culture Shop! in Newcastle City Centre as part of the national Empty Shops Initiative. This attracted over 1500 visitors. A cinema-style space was set up in the shop where stories were shown on a big screen, a number of one day workshops were also delivered including Culture Shock! one-day workshops to collect more stories. Objects from the museum collections were displayed for people to look at and handle.
A two-week Culture Shock! festival also took place during October and November where stories were screened in unique locations across the North East region include secret building projections in Newcastle City Centre, a boat trip down the River Tyne which included a film reel of Culture Shock! stories and archival film footage from the Northern Region Film and Television Archive, and a big screen at a fireworks display at one of our Roman Fort sites, which attracted 7,500 visitors.
