I wanted to be part of this club, to live a dream. I was never going to play football for the
club, I had to look for another way. This way came in October 1999 when he was shown
for the first time, it was H'Angus the Monkey. I knew from that first time I saw him, that's
what I wanted to be. Performers come and went and then a certain Stewie Drummond
landed the role which shot H'Angus into the limelight.
As Stewie went on to stand for town Mayor, H'Angus was left behind. I felt it was my
chance but still I could not get the part. Then it happened in 2006, I was in. 10th of
February, a day I will never forget. I was H'Angus the Monkey, the person I wanted to
be back in 1998. Stepping out for the first time onto the pitch with the players and club
I'd supported since I was a boy was a memory I'll never forget. I was part of the club I
loved.
The season was over and a new one was upon us, games coming thick and fast. My
first game couldn't have went any better. We had a strong team and my first away
game, Daly notching and running to H'Angus to celebrate. I can't help it but I was living
a dream, win after win. We had to win at Rochdale, three thousand fans made the
journey to Spotlands. I remember coming out of the tunnel to loud applause, thinking
the players were following me but no, the fans were clapping H'Angus, yes me again. A
lump in my throat and a tear of emotion in my eye as the fans greeted me with photos
galore, singing and dancing. The stands were rocking. This was what being H'Angus
was about.
We came runners up and H'Angus had a great season on the pitch and off it with
mascot race wins and meeting and greeting all the fans. H'Angus is a very popular
person in Hartlepool and not only is he the face of Hartlepool United, I hope I have
brought a smile to the thousands of fans he has come into contact with. I know I smile at
each and every one of them. H'Angus is not a job to me, H'Angus is Hartlepool United,
the club I love to follow.
Scott talks about being H'Angus the Monkey, the mascot for Hartlepool United Football Club and describes how it is such a great job. Posted on 16/11/2009 at 03:23:22
