Video transcript

During 1987, I was working as part of the excavation team, at Catcote archaeological site. One day, when the weather was particularly bright and sunny, I was cleaning an area of excavation with my trowel when I came across a small piece of Roman pottery. It was nothing special, almost black and rough in texture but I stopped and just looked at it and suddenly realised, this is nearly 2000 years old. At that moment an interest of mine, which had been lying dormant for a time, suddenly sparked into life. I am still heavily involved in Living History today and currently portray a Roman customs official of the late 4th century. In this role I have revisited the site where I once worked, providing a link between then and now.

If it hadn't been for that one, small piece of seemingly uninteresting archaeology, I would not have begun again on something that has literally changed my life but I sometimes can't help but wonder..."whatever became of that small piece of history that someone created nearly two millennia ago?", and had such an effect on somebody whose existence he could barely have imagined.
