Video transcript

I never thought that I would be the type of girl to get married.  Me and my girlfriend we’d both talked about our views to other people and made them known. But we didn’t like the idea of having a ring to show the love and commitment we both share.

All that changed though, one Thursday night in the Old Brown Jug when a good friend asked my opinion. I was truthful, I said I would love top marry Ashleigh but from what I[‘d heard her say I didn’t think it was ever possible.  The following Tuesday, however, I did find myself, Ashleigh and Steven in town looking for our rings. Ashleigh, being the man of our relationship, wanted to make sure I found a ring first before she even thought about herself. By the end of the day I did, but she didn’t. I was eager for her to get a ring as I wanted to be the one to propose on that Sunday when all the family were together. She agreed that she would have another look when she went to collect mine.

That Wednesday changed my life. Throughout the day she telling me that she’d got mine but she still hadn’t found the right one for her. I was disappointed but we agreed to go for our usual drink after she had finished work. I went down with my mum and we were met by all the faces of the good friends and staff and punters we all know. We were all having a good natter, that is except for Steven who was messing around on his phone. Before I could even say anything, Ashleigh stood up and asked everyone’s attention. She got down on one knee, this was it, she was going to be the one to propose. Although I knew we were going to get engaged, it was still a surprise. I told her that she should have waited until I could return the favour. She looked at me and said ‘Well, you still can’. But I wondered how.

It was then she pulled another ring from her pocket and handed it to me. Feeling overwhelmed I did except, this was it, my turn now. Everyone was so happy for the both of us.

Even when I pass old school acquaintances they are as amazed as I am at the news. But they are more surprised at who I am going to marry. I was never open about my sexuality at school and I once cared too much about what people thought of us but not now, not since I met the girl I fell in love with.
