Video transcript

I always remember when shipyard fortnight came round, this was when nearly all of Sunderland took there holidays. My nana, mam, dad and two brothers would leave to go on holiday up to Seahouses in Northumberland, which we loved, we did this for about seven years. We would pack dad’s car which I think was an old Riley 1.5 with a roof rack on top. lt took about three hours to get there. The farm was called Moorveiw Farm which today is still called. Mrs Kayhill, the farmer’s wife, would make us breakfast then we would be off to the beach, rain or sunshine. Once a week we would go to the castle. I always remember putting up the tent. Then dad would get the heater out, put the paraffin in and sit and have a good laugh while dad would pump it like the wind. The smell of the paraffin has always been with me since I was a kid. At the end of the day Mr Kayhill, the farmer, would let us help him. He would show us how to milk the cows and feed the pigs and the horses. After that we go back to the farm house where the smell of bread filled the kitchen. These are one of my happiest memories of my boyhood times.
