Two years ago and over 350 miles away in London, i sat at home and was in two minds
where to go to university, a very important decision has i had never been away from
home. The choice to stay at home and and live the comfortable student life or to leave
and live the poor independent one. My brother James who had recently graduated from
Newcastle University told me about the bustling busy city life of Newcastle, 'puns and
clubs galore he said'. It all sounded very appealing to me and after some serious
thought I went ahead and applied for Northumbria University. In September 2007, my
parents and I drove a long 5 hours to Newcastle, the further we drove the more anxious I
became, I was going to miss the nights out with my friends, my family, our family dog,
Saracen and my boyfriend Chris. I arrived late afternoon and after unpacking, I suddenly
felt very alone. Thankfully my friend Georgia had come to University with me and it was
very reassuring knowing she was there for me as we got lost around the busy town
center. I always remember hearing many new words around me that were normal for
the Geordie's but foreign to us. Words such as why-aye and hinny made me fee very
confused and still do. It also made me feel very far away from home. When i met my
new flat mates, they were great, and i had a lot of fun going out around the town on
student nights, drinking plenty of course. Now 2 years later, i now feel very happy and
comfortable here in the friendly city of newcastle and i now longer feel alone. Although i
miss my family, friends and boyfriend, my new friends are in a way like my new family.
