Video transcript

I have a friend who is a little bit crazy. I call him Mr Mohawk after his hairstyle. His big ambition in life is to set the world record for visiting every London underground station in as quick a time as possible. Unfortunately he has never succeeded in beating the world record.

When he came to visit me in Newcastle he was excited to discover the existence of the Tyne and Wear Metro. He was even more excited to discover that there was not a standing world record for the fastest time around the Metro network. Right then and there he roped me in to start planning a route that would bring us minor notoriety.

We started at South Hylton and travelled upwards through Sunderland until we reached Fellgate. Mr Mohawk then said we had to catch a bus to South Shields so that we wouldn’t waste time by doubling back on ourselves. We caught a bus that journeyed through South Tyneside until we arrived at our destination. From South Shields, Mr Mohawk and I travelled along the entire yellow line moving through Gateshead, Newcastle, Jesmond, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Wallsend, Heaton and Byker before reaching the end of the line at St James. We then jogged to Monument station so that we didn’t miss our final train. Finally we boarded a train destined for the airport. As soon as we reached that last platform Mr Mohawk clicked on his stopwatch. We had journeyed around the entire Tyne and Wear Metro network in 3 hours and 5 minutes. Mr Mohawk was overjoyed at setting this record but it did leave lingering questions. Would anyone break our record? Then again, would anyone want to break out record?

Nick, a Middlesbrough supporter, is pessimistic about his team's chances against Newcastle at a snowy St James Park. Boro don't let him down. Posted on 21/06/2010 at 01:00:15
