Video transcript

My first holiday abroad.

In February 1971 I was 25 years old and it was the day after my birthday. Me and my mam went to Arenal and stayed at the hotel Lancaster in Playa de Palma. The weather was lovely and warm but the builders next to the hotel weren’t so warm as they stood round a brazier to keep themselves nice and warm. Me and my mam went to the wine reception on arrival and tested the wine, yum yum! My friends that were with us enjoyed a drink or two or three or four. We were all in a tipsy state apart from one of our friends who didn’t drink. She was an unhappy chappie.

The hotel was great and the best thing about it was the cost in them days. It was £21 fully inclusive from Gatwick airport based on full board. It was a 2 star hotel, swimming pool, bar by the pool, children’s playground and evening meals. It had a baby sitting service. Night time was best for me, we had so much entertainment that lasted well into the night. This was a start of more holidays abroad for me.
