Video transcript

People are strange yet unique. They are like jigsaws made up of a number of small images to make a whole and everyone is different as we are touched and effected by different things. The idea of identity is something we all express in one way or another and have done for many, many years.

The people in the Roman Empire did it through the use of brooches. The Greeks also did it through the images placed upon their coins. We do it today through dress and the people we associate with. However, there’s much more to us than that.

I see myself of a mosaic made up of different experiences and events in my life. I will always be changing and developing. Some parts of my identity will remain static, like my connection to my family. But others will always be changing. At any moment in time I could choose to express one identity over the others in order to fit the situation.

I have a number of different identities such as the individual who knows a lot about karate and has a black belt. The student at Newcastle University that is studying for an MA. An individual that owns and cares for a number of different pets. A person who loves history, especially castles. A child that spent many a summer holiday on a Northumberland beach. An annoying flatmate that loves to play the saxophone. A person that has difficulty reading because of dyslexia. And an individual that dislikes spending time on their own.

All of these come together to form myself mosaic. This is me, I am unique. There is no one else like me because of it. What are you made up of?
