Would you like to be someone else for a short while. I first became interested in the
theatre when i taken to the pantomime at the grand theatre in Byker which closed in
1954.
But i never trod the boards as they say until i joined John Lewis. I had been working
for a month when i was asked if i could act. Since then i have been a lot of different
people.
I have been Mr Wembley the rather camp menswear manager in a deptartment store
comedy which was one of our most popular plays. I have been the Earl of Dorincourt
complete with silver topped cane waiting in the wings for my cue, walked on, could not
remember a single word, thumped my stick on the stage, spluttered a bit, remembered
the words.
The next day a friend complemented me on my performance especially the stick
thumping episode. i had got away with it. It is also exciting and keeps you on your toes. I
worked with a lad who could not learn words but would act you off the stage.
But you get the point you can be all sorts of people a vicar, a butler, a soldier, a murderer,
a con man, a lord, whatever. My last part was Ellwood P Dowd and I had an invisible friend
called Harvey who was a white rabbit. James Stewart had the part in the film Harvey. Its a
reflection of life with all its comedy and tragedy. How far can you go? Get out there join in!
I was impressed with your 'improvised' acting when you forgot your lines and thumped your stick! Great archive photos and wonderful descriptions of some of the characters you played. StevePosted on 21/10/2009 at 01:49:54
lovely to hear you have not lost your 'twang' ! (harvey)Posted on 22/10/2009 at 08:38:39
What a fantastic window into a life... do you still perform today?Posted on 09/12/2009 at 10:00:56
