My sister and I are very close. She's my "big" sister. She likes to think that she's
years and years older than me but to be precise she's 485 days older.
When we were very little we used to share a double bed. We slept side by side, a
mop of curly hair, rosy cheeks and our dummies loose in our mouths, when we
looked like this, our mam used to say we were all "goy goy" she made these words
up but they make perfect sense.
We've always loved dressing up and entertaining the rest of the family. I remember
Uncle Bill, whose house was dead smelly. Our mam used to make us go round and
visit him. When we got there we used to sing really loudly to him whether he liked it
or not:
The cow kicked nelly in the belly in the barn,
The cow kicked nelly in the belly in the barn,
The cow kicked nelly in the belly in the barn,
But the farmer said it wouldn't do her any harm!
Second verse same as the first but a little bit LOUDER and a little bit WORSE!
We soon forgot about how smelly it was.
Just because my brother was a boy didn't mean he could escape dressing up, in fact
he loved it. As a loving sister I've often helped to fit toupees, apply fake tan or
sellotape a nose up.
Parties were always themed, what's the point if it's not in fancy dress? Mam used to
encourage us, donating her old clothes to our fancy dress box.
Our love of fancy dress has definitely not died, I can't imagine anything more fun
than dressing up! A wig, a moustache, a hat? You can be anything and anyone you
want! What's more it makes you laugh.
Hopefully when my nieces are older they can play together, annoy our relatives,
create their own stories, be whoever they want to be. At the moment though they've
got rosy cheeks, dummies loose in their mouths and are all "goy goy".
