Video transcript

I worked at Riddick’s Shoe Shop in Fowler Street South Shields for 23 years. I started in the children’s department and worked my way up. I really enjoyed my work, but we used to get some very awkward customers as my poem will tell you:-

They come into our little shop with feet all shapes and sizes With corns, bunions and varicose veins It’s really hard to describe it!

Can you help me please my dear I’m really hard to please It’s got to be flat and broad and black And extremely smart you see.

I climb my little ladder with a quick and pleasant smile And quickly forage through my stock And make a little pile.

Size six I said madam As I get down on my knees With my shoehorn at the ready It really is a squeeze!

Would you like to try a size larger? Your toes are squashed inside! All right my dear and while you’re here I think I’ve changed my mind.

I’m going to a wedding and my new coat is green Something with a little heel I think I fancy cream.

How does that feel madam? It really does look smart With your little bag and feathery hat You’ll steal everybody’s heart.

Ah! That’s better! Is it leather? How much did you say? I’ll just think it over Thank you and good day!
