Mondays. Washing day was always Monday. Lines of pure white sheets and towels
used to blow on the line in the back lane. And woe betide any coalman who tried to
come up the lane at the time! When I grew bigger I had to help turn a big wooden
mangle in the yard and the whites were soaked in cold water with a blue bag to
make them whiter. Every day was special, each one had a job. Baking one day,
cleaning windows, washing floors, then polishing the fire irons and then covering
them up with newspaper to keep them clean for the weekend.
