"When your 18 son, I'll take you to the pub."
These were some of the first words my Uncle, Ian, said to me.
I've always been close with our Ian. When ever we got together when I was younger,
we always got into trouble for messing around, mainly from my mum; she used to hate it
when he would get me and our Lynsey over excited, then go, leaving my mum to try and
get us to bed.
I remember during one of our family Uno games at my Grandma's, I was really over
excited and my arms were waving around all over the place, so he tied my arms behind
the chair with my own jumper.
As I got older he would teach me D.I.Y. jobs around the house. I've painted fences and
garden swings, taken paint off stair banisters with power tools, yes, it's hard to believe,
he trusts me with power tools. He takes me to watch him play rounds of golf and tries to
teach me how to swing a golf club correctly, hoping I’ll be able to join him one day but I
still can't get it right. We do tend to keep away from courses near busy roads though, so
that buses and BMW's are safe from his flying golf balls.
Over the past year, we've grown closer, sharing interests in Scout camps and the Mount
Pleasant in Sheffield, his local. We might live miles away, but there's a bond that I don't
think will ever be broken and I believe that we will continue growing closer. I love my
Uncle Ian and respect him a great deal. He did keep his word by the way and the next
rounds on me.
