Video transcript

World War II 1935 to 1949.

What does it make you think of?

Soldiers in uniform, gas masks, ration books, children being evacuated.

To me it means something different.

World War II had a big impact on my family. I’m going to tell you a love story. Joseph Stanley Okon, this is Joseph Stanley Okon, he is my granddad but I call him Yushu. This is Elizabeth Rockosky, she is my grandma but I call her Omi. During world war II they were boyfriend and girlfriend. They loved each other. It wasn’t easy to be in love during the war. Yushu is Polish and Omi is German. Yushu was a paratrooper in the Polish army, he fought with British and American troops and sadly he saw his best friend shot. Omi was a nurse in the German army. They were supposed to be enemies. There is a happy ending to this love story – a wedding, children and a move to Newcastle. I feel good, I feel proud, I feel strong, this is my family.
